In the Fall of 1895 a group of independent oil refiners, producers, and pipeline operators organized to counter to the dominance of Standard Oil Company.
In 1900, Pure Oil became the holding company for three independent pipeline companies and incorporated in 1902.
In 1917 a Columbus-based Ohio Cities Gas Company made an offer for the company. The company accepted the offer.
In 1920, Ohio Cities Gas Company's name changed to Pure Oil. In 1926, the headquarters moved to Chicago.
By the 1960s Pure Oil ranked as one of the country's 100 largest industrial companies.
Early Pure Oil gas stations were named the English Cottage style and were designed by C. A. Petersen in 1925 with the idea of a cottage type of station that would blend into and harmonize with a residential neighborhood.

The English Cottage station served Pure Oil well until it was abandoned in the 1950s.
The Union Oil Company of California purchased Pure Oil in 1965 and in1970 the remaining locations were rebranded as Union 76 which is currently owned by Phillips 66.
