Monday Morning Coffee: CVS / Today's Economy

Now, Richmond, Indiana, the county seat Wayne County, has a 2025 population of 35,243.

However, as with ever so many Midwest cities, it is declining at a rate of -0.26% annually and its population has decreased by -1.27% since 2020.

At the start of 2025, among other retail outlets located in the eastern, central and western parts of the city, there were three CVS Pharmacy's .

All were similar to the one on the Westside.

In its early 2025 annual report CVS announced that it would be closing 271 retail stores in 2025 as part of its "enterprise-wide restructuring plan intended to streamline and simplify the organization."

On March 11, 2025, the central CVS Pharmacy in Richmond closed.

CVS Pharmacy organization is now focusing is on smaller store formats exclusively offering pharmacy services.

A problem that is affecting the company is scale. While CVS has thousands of stores nationwide, sales have declined for years, especially against bigger competitors like Amazon or Walmart.

The economic climate is not only effecting small business's as large nationwide business's are forced to close outlets due to the actions of even larger national corporations.
