Monday Morning Coffee: Mechanicsville, Iowa Walkabout

Mechanicsville is a city in Cedar County that was so named because many of its early settlers were mechanics.

In 2000 there were 1173 people, in 2010 the number was 1146 and in 2013 it was down to 1129.  As of July, 2015 the population had dropped to 1034 people.

Dan's Tires and More has been serving the area since 1990 with a motto:  Where Service is Our Name and Tires are our Game.

Every now and then small communities offer up surprises.

Thos. Hall writes:

My work ethic is very much embedded in a traditional approach to craft.  Whenever possible I use traditional joinery and time tested-technique.  I believe furniture should fulfill a function and the design must be subordinate to the purpose for which a piece was created.

Wandering a couple doors from the woodworking shop

Mechanicsville is a Midwestern city with a declining population. In spite of that, it offers rather interesting architecture, businesses and craftsman.  Need to return and probe a bit further.
