Pharmacist John A. Hook, the son of German immigrants, opened his first drug store in Indianapolis in 1900.
Originally a small, family business, it grew to 380 locations in Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio by 1990.
Headquartered in Indy, it had locations across the state, including smaller towns like Union City, offering prescriptions, cosmetics, snacks, health, beauty aids and general goods.
A civic-minded company, Hook’s desegregated lunch counters in 1947, hired minorities for management positions, and provided pharmacists with drug abuse prevention training to better serve the community.
The chain was acquired by Revco in 1994, and then CVS bought Revco, leading to many Hook's locations becoming CVS stores.
