Monday Morning Coffee: Wandering, Light and New Challenge

Yesterday - Sunday - a break in the weather.  Sun along with temperatures in low 50's.  Early in the morning, packed the gear, put Liah in charge of headquarters and headed to Northwest Indiana. Managed to visit three locations with varying degrees of success.

Again discovered that while the sun is out, winter light is  different than summer light.  After many days of colder weather, when the sun finally appears, the atmosphere is clear and light is harsh.  Shadows are deep, highlights very bright and washed out.  All this amounts to very high contrast images.

Summer light is often filtered by a hazy atmosphere. This diffused light allows for lower contrast with open shadows and luminescent highlights.

While it was wonderful to be out and about photographing, the results on first viewing will require a careful post processing.  Results in coming days.

Late last week was directed to view some black and white photographs.  Once again, realized the strength of monotone photography.  Color images, because of the color, sometimes detract from message of the photograph.  With this in mind, decided to revisit the  black and white photographic world.

Now, much of the recent work has depicted an early time using modern materials.  Older structures constructed using materials of the time with latest digital color images.

A challenge is represent late 19 and early 20 century architecture, using monotone materials .

   Greentown, Indiana.

A new challenge would be to present more recent construction using earlier analog black and white materials.

   Dayton, Ohio.
