Monday Morning Coffee: Portland, Indiana.


Portland, Indiana is the county seat of Jay County. The county was formed in 1836 and named in honor of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States.   U.S. Route 27 runs through the center of the city, leading north 49 miles  to Fort Wayne and south 43 miles to Richmond.

As of the census of 2000 there were 6,437 people, by 2010, it was down to 6,223, in 2014 it was reduced to 6,204  (change since 2000: -3.6%) and up to 6,277 as of July 2018.

 The First National Bank of Portland was established on January 1, 1904.

As of Jan 4, 2007 it is inactive having merged into and subsequently operated as part of First Merchants Bank National Association.
