TGIF: Lowden, Iowa Walkabout

Lowden is a city in Cedar County, Iowa with a total area of 1.02 square miles. The population in 2000 was 794.  In  2010 it was 789 and in 2013 it was down to 780.  This is a population change of minus 1.8% since 2000.

The city is an outgrowth of the Chicago and North Western Railway which was built to Lowden in July 1858.

There are several architectural examples of wonderful detailed construction.  Such as

and this residential building converted from what appears to be a bank building.

In addition to these early structures, there are several newer buildings including a public library

and a modernized grocery / meat market.

Down the street and around a corner stands

which is now another residential location.

In spite of its decreasing population, Lowden appears to be a prospering community.

  1. Wow! Can't believe you found my hometown! The first pic is what was the newspaper office back in the 70s and 80s. The brick building is part of Norton's attorney offices along with the building with the little courtyard just to the west. The grocery store also has a dollar store section. And ground floor of the Opera House is actually a local tavern which is entered by the door on the north side. One of my faves had always been the hotel. They are celebrating it's 100th anniversary this year.
